History

In the place called Katgara, famous for traditional British indigo, near Purapara market of Maheshpur Upazila of Jhenaidah district, the son-in-law of Shahid Kamruzzaman, one of the four national leaders, the organizer of the liberation war, with the cooperation of Md. Sazzatuza Jumma Chowdhury, the son-in-law of  Maheshpur and prominent industrialist, and the sincere efforts of the founding principal, Babu Balai Chandra Pal, and the people of the area. The journey of the college started on 22nd February 1999 AD in cooperation. It was granted permission to teach by the Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Jessore from the academic year 1999-2000 and academic recognition in July, 2001. The first batch of the college took part in the Higher Secondary Public Examination in 2001. Later, the college was affiliated to MPO in May, 2022 as usual on the basis of public examination results.  

But the saddest chapter in the history of the college came when the MPO of the college was canceled due to the intervention of the then Member of Parliament 83, Jhenaidah-3 (Maheshpur-Kotchandpur). Later, when Principal Balai Chandra Pal sued the High Court against the cancellation of the MPO, His Highness the High Court and the Supreme Court ordered the MPO of the college to be maintained. As per the orders of the High Court, the deprived teachers and employees started getting government salary allowance from May, 2010. Presently, the Katgara College was named as "Dr. Saiful Islam Degree College, Katgara" on 26/04/2012 AD as per the government rules, after Dr. Saiful Islam, a distinguished American expatriate physician from Andulia village of Sukhpukuria union of Chowagacha upazila of Jessore district. Overcoming hundreds of adversities, the college has now been upgraded to a degree college by getting affiliation with the National University from the academic year 2012-2014.
